Performance, Engine, and Transmission
The next Honda Civic Type R will continue to be driven by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, but it will almost certainly be more powerful than the last iteration, which produced 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Honda has announced that the most powerful Civic will retain its standard manual gearbox. The new Type R will not feature a new chassis, but rather an upgrade of the one that powered the previous generation. That, we believe, rules out the use of a control-arm front suspension, as seen on the Acura TLX. Instead, the Honda will most certainly continue to employ its revolutionary dual-axis strut front suspension, which does an excellent job of controlling torque steer. While the next Civic Type R isn't as physically striking, it does include a big rear wing and other aerodynamic features. Instead of the previous model's 20-inch wheels, the new CTR rides on 19-inchers wrapped in summer rubber with extra sidewall.
Factory aero and exterior paint colors
The 2023 Civic Type R, like the previous one, will benefit from factory-optimized integrated aerodynamics for increased downforce and lower drag. Flared fenders house huge wheels and tyres on all four sides of the vehicle. For increased airflow, the front fenders have bigger holes than the conventional Civic and side sill spoilers behind the front wheels. A revised rear wing and new rear diffuser aid in the stability of the Civics’ rear half.
There are some aesthetic changes as well. The honeycomb mesh in the front grille matches the mesh trim in the interior of the performance CTR. The Type R also has larger back doors than the normal Civic, as well as a redesigned rear bumper that showcases the car's signature center three-outlet exhaust. The famous Championship White, Rallye Red, Crystal Black Pearl, and Sonic Gray Pearl hues from the last Civic Type R return for this one. Racing Blue Pearl, the fifth color choice, replacing Boost Blue Pearl from the previous range.
Real-World MPG and Fuel Economy
Neither the EPA nor Honda have said how fuel-efficient the 2023 Civic Type R will be in city or highway driving. Once those numbers are released and we get the opportunity to test one on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, we will be able to evaluate its real-world mpg. Visit the EPA's website for additional information on the Civic Type R's fuel efficiency.
Cargo, Interior, and Comfort
Although the 2017 Civic Type R has a simpler interior design than its predecessor, which should give it a more mature appearance, it's not lacking in aesthetic flare. The brightest flash of color comes from the red seat upholstery and matching carpeting. The Type R, like the ordinary Civic, has a digital gauge cluster and physical temperature controls atop a center console with a spacious storage bin and two cup holders.
Technology
The Civic Type R's +R driving mode is the most severe (optimizing suspension, steering, throttle responsiveness, and so on), and it gets a new model-specific meter style for 2023. The gauge cluster screen's upper portion displays visuals for engine rpm, rev indication lights, and gear position, while the below multi-information area displays customizable vehicle information.
We also expect technologies from the 2018 Civics’ high-end trims to make its way to the Type R. Look for a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen that supports Apple Car Play and Android Auto.
More with the vehicle's arrival in fall 2022, 2023 Civic Type R specifics, including pricing, will be available. The 2021 CTR had a sticker price in the $40,000 area before markup, so expect beginning pricing to be higher on the next-generation vehicle.
