Electric cars have now entered the mainstream, accounting for 15.2% of new automobile sales in the previous month. Furthermore, as regulations limiting the types of vehicles allowed into large cities are implemented, their growth will only increase.
Range anxiety, or the concern that you won't have enough gas to go where you're going, has generally kept them from selling in greater numbers. This is becoming less of an issue as many models are capable of travelling more than 200 miles between charges.
So, which electric cars should you think about? Here, we rank our top ten and tell which one you should avoid.
Kia e-Niro
The Kia e-Niro completely eliminates range concern, with the 253 miles it covered in our Real Range test being one of the best we've seen so far. Although costs have grown dramatically since we selected the e-Niro our Car of the Year in 2019, you receive good practicality, performance, comfort, and equipment.
Hyundai Ioniq 5
Hyundai's Ioniq 5 has a unique design, a big and practical cabin, and a long list of standard features. If you choose the larger alloy wheel options, the ride comfort and refinement suffer a little, but it's still an interesting addition to the large electric car ranks.
Audi E-tron GT
The Audi E-tron GT may be a milder version of the Porsche Taycan, but there's no denying that it's a great-handling electric car. It's also quick, comfy, and fairly useful. However, the Tesla Model S is faster and more spacious for families, and we like the Taycan for its greater agility (by a hair).
BMW iX3
The iX3 is practically BMW iX3 – which is a good thing. Aside from minor styling features and the fact that the combustion engine has been replaced with an electric motor, the iX3 is essentially a BMW X3 – which is a good thing. It means you'll get a functional and stylish SUV with the most advanced infotainmet system available. It also means it turns and handles better than competitors while giving a smooth ride Zero emissions and a long charging interval are only added benefits.
Fiat 500
The new Fiat 500 is the automobile that was made for city driving. It's shorter than its main competitors, so it can fit into places where others can't, and its narrow turning circle, ultra-light steering, and excellent forward sight make it exceptionally easy to manoeuvre as it darts about tight city streets in a polished, fluid manner. It does, however, have a good range and isn't just restricted to urban development. And, unlike its competitors, it comes in a convertible version.
Kia EV6
The Kia EV6 is a better electric car than the Hyundai Ioniq 5, because it is more pleasurable to drive and has a somewhat more upscale interior. At the same time, it has a great range and can charge up quickly, just like the Ioniq 5. Keep in mind that the less expensive rear-wheel-drive EV6s are more cost-effective than the speedier four-wheel-drive variants.
Skoda Enyaq iV
The Skoda Enyaq is a practical, enjoyable to drive, stylish, and well-equipped vehicle. Perhaps most impressive of all is the value it provides – the '60' version is comparable in price to smaller options such as the Kia e-Niro and qualifies for a £2500 government subsidy.
Porsche Taycan
The Porsche Taycan is the automobile for you if you want all of the benefits of an electric car while still being extremely fun to drive. Inside, it's also pretty useful and very classy, so while it's not cheap, it's well worth it.
Volkswagen ID.3
The Volkswagen ID.3 is a fun car to drive thanks to its rear-wheel drive, precise steering, and great body control. Furthermore, its usability rivals that of the roomiest family hatchbacks, resale values are expected to be excellent, and it will be inexpensive to run for both corporate car drivers and private buyers. It's a fantastic choice when you consider its high performance and extensive range.
Tesla Model 3
Few cars have generated as much buzz as the Model 3, and even fewer can match what it has to offer in practice. Tesla's most cheap car is fun to drive, loaded with technology, quick (in Performance trim), and surprisingly practical. When you add in a competitive price, especially given its incredible acceleration, it's not only the greatest all-around electric car on the market today, but one of the best choices in general.
